Possession Support Staff

To work within a safety critical environment, carrying out possession support duties under the direction of the S/PICOP or relevant supervisor

Key responsibilities

  • To assist as a team member in managing the line possession.
  • Attend (S)PICOP and COSS briefings and raise any concerns if the messages are not clear
  • Manage or support pre-possession checks, briefings etc and be in place at blocking points at least one hour in advance
  • Monitor blocking points and place boards and detonators according the NWR guidelines
  • Attend worksites to carry out safety audits on behalf of Network Rail
  • Attend and support on site walkouts (pre work), so as to understand the environment and investigate all safety concerns.
  • Comply with all relevant legislation and railway rules
  • Communicate with (S)PICOP before placing or lifting any protection
  • A good understanding of regulations regarding safety and ready to report any incidents, accidents, near misses or concerns immediately

  • Network Rail Audit
  • Number of reportable incidents
  • Complete, timely and accurate return of relevant possession documentation
  • Attendance and punctuality Complete and accurate time sheets

  • Leads by example
  • Understands the implications of a failure to carry out every task in a safe and compliant manner
  • Geographical knowledge
  • In depth knowledge of possession requirements
  • Knowledge of Network Rail rules and regulations 
  • Safety awareness

Competences and qualifications

  • PTS AC/DCCR
  • IWA or COSS 
  • PS
  • Manual Handling
  • Ability to use own initiative 
  • Good communication skills, especially whilst relaying telephone messages
  • Pro-active under pressure
